July 2026 in AI Search: ChatGPT took 92.4% of assistant referrals while 40 to 60% of citations rotated out from under everyone

Four things changed in July: the traffic picture consolidated onto one platform, Google finally gave marketers AI visibility data, ChatGPT opened a self-serve ad auction, and the evidence that AI answers destroy valuable clicks got harder to argue with. This is Lureon's monthly brief on what happened, what it means, and what to do before the next cycle.

Quick answer: what changed in AI search in July 2026? Four things. Assistant traffic consolidated: ChatGPT now carries 92.4% of standalone AI referrals, Claude passed Perplexity, and Copilot has collapsed. Google expanded its Search Console generative AI reports and switched on AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July. OpenAI opened a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager on 22 July, splitting the answer into an organic layer and a paid layer. And an updated randomized experiment measured a 39.8% click loss from AI Overviews, with no quality difference in the visits that disappeared. Underneath all of it, citation volatility stayed the defining property of the channel: 40 to 60% of cited domains rotate every month, which is why AEO is a maintenance discipline, not a launch.
1 · Traffic

The assistant market consolidated onto one platform

Previsible published its third AI Traffic Study in early July, analyzing 6.77 million LLM-driven sessions across 166 GA4 properties over 19 months. It is the longest-running dataset in the category, and it tells a consolidation story.

Standalone AI referral traffic: growth over 19 months
Change from November 2024 to May 2026, by platform
Claude 64x ChatGPT 12.8x · 92.4% share Gemini 3.2x Perplexity -61% from peak Copilot -96% from peak Total monthly sessions grew 9.9x, reaching 644,478 in May 2026
Source: Previsible 2026 State of AI Discovery, 6.77M sessions across 166 GA4 properties, Nov 2024 to May 2026. Bars show growth multiples, not share.

Three takeaways. Claude grew 64x and overtook Perplexity in March, concentrated among developers, technical buyers, and professional services, which is exactly the B2B profile our Claude platform brief covers. Perplexity and Copilot show that last year's consensus bets can reverse fast, so single-platform strategies are fragile by construction. And the study's own caveat is the strategic headline: AI discovery inside Google's own surfaces almost certainly moves more traffic than every standalone assistant combined, which keeps Gemini and AI Overviews the priority surface even though ChatGPT wins the referral count.

One operational detail worth acting on this month: roughly 28.8% of ChatGPT's referrals land on a site's internal search results page rather than the page that answers the question. The model trusts the domain but cannot always identify the right URL. Internal site search has quietly become an acquisition surface, and almost nobody has optimized it.

2 · Measurement

Google gave marketers real AI visibility data, with gaps

Search Console's generative AI performance reports expanded to more sites through early July, after launching in June. This is the first native view of visibility inside Google's AI surfaces.

What you can see

Impressions inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover, broken out by page, country, device, and date. The data also flows into the overall performance report, so aggregate numbers do not change. There is now a toggle to block your content from AI surfaces, which forfeits AI impressions without affecting normal Search ranking.

What you still cannot

No clicks, no CTR, no query data, and no API access. You can see visibility but not its traffic value, which makes third-party citation tracking and GA4 channel work necessary rather than optional. Rollout remains incremental, starting with a UK subset, and Google has said it will add metrics over time without committing to dates.

Also in July: Google switched on AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July, the last major market without either surface, so French impression curves start from zero right now. And the European Commission issued binding Digital Markets Act decisions on 16 July requiring Google to open Android features to rival assistants and share anonymized search data with competing engines and chatbots, which over time widens the set of surfaces a brand needs to be visible in.

3 · Monetization

ChatGPT became a two-layer channel

On 22 July, OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager, letting advertisers build campaigns targeted on conversational context rather than keywords. The answer now has an organic layer and a paid layer, the same split Google Search went through, compressed into a single launch.

The speed is the story. Ad penetration reached about 51% of US replies in early July, after swinging from a late-May peak of 26.5% down to near zero in mid-June and back above 51% within weeks. Ads are live in six countries. In roughly twelve weeks the pricing model flipped from a flat $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum to a self-serve CPC auction with a $50,000 minimum, which opens the channel to far smaller advertisers.

What this does not change: the recommendation itself is still earned. Paid units sit beside the answer, labeled as sponsored, while the brands named inside the answer get there through authority signals. If anything, a visible ad layer raises the value of organic citation, because buyers discount what they can tell was bought. The deeper shift is agentic commerce: when an assistant makes a purchase recommendation on a user's behalf, it draws on structured product and entity data, not campaign creative. Clean feeds and consistent entity data are becoming an acquisition asset.

4 · Evidence

The click-loss argument got harder to dismiss

An updated randomized field experiment published in July measured a 39.8% reduction in organic clicks on searches where AI Overviews appeared. The methodology matters more than the number.

Google's standing defense has been that AI answers mainly absorb low-value or accidental clicks. The updated study tested exactly that: the extra visits generated when Overviews were removed showed no statistically significant difference in return-to-search behavior, visits under ten seconds, or time on the destination site. The lost clicks were normal clicks. The first organic result nearly doubled its clicks when the Overview was removed, and losses concentrated on informational queries, where Overviews appear most. Our standing analysis of this shift lives in AI Is Eating Search.

Downstream, the economics are visible elsewhere: publisher ad inventory fell by roughly a third to two fifths year over year in the second quarter as zero-click experiences reduced referrals. For B2B brands the lesson is not to mourn the clicks but to move the target: being named in the answer is the position that still converts.

5 · The Undercurrent

Why a monthly brief exists: citations rotate constantly

The most underreported number in AI search is not traffic share. It is churn. Citations are not positions you hold, they are placements that rotate.

Monthly citation drift: share of cited domains that change
Month-over-month turnover of cited domains for identical queries, by platform
Google AI Overviews 59.3% ChatGPT 54.1% Microsoft Copilot 53.4% Perplexity 40.5% Over six months, 70 to 90% of cited domains are entirely different
Source: Profound analysis of 240 million ChatGPT citations and cross-platform citation tracking, 2026, as compiled in the Machine Relations citation drift analysis.

Corroborating evidence from every direction: AirOps found only about 30% of brands stay visible from one AI answer to the next for the same query. ChatGPT's own citation volume fell more than 90% at a March and April trough before rebounding in May, which reframes the trend as instability rather than decline. And brands are roughly 6.5x more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domains, which is why earned media is the only structural defense against drift. Rankings don't pay you. Revenue does, and in a channel this volatile, revenue comes from consistent presence rather than a single won placement. The freshness mechanics behind this are in our citation freshness brief.

6 · The Market

Money is arriving faster than expertise

The AI visibility category matured from a fringe idea into a funded software market and a budget line inside enterprise marketing.

$300M+raised across AI visibility tooling between summer 2025 and spring 2026
$1Bvaluation for category leader Profound after a $96M Series C
94%of CMOs plan to increase AI visibility spend this year (Conductor)
12%of enterprise digital budgets already allocated to AI visibility

Two consequences for buyers. First, tooling is consolidating around a split between purpose-built AEO platforms and AI modules bolted onto legacy SEO suites, and the honest answer on which to buy depends on company size, budget, and whether a team exists to act on the data. A dashboard nobody acts on is an expensive screenshot. Second, budget is moving faster than capability, which means a lot of spend is landing on measurement rather than on the earned media, content structure, and entity work that actually moves citations. That gap is the opportunity for brands that execute now.

7 · Action

What to do before the next cycle

Five moves that follow directly from what changed in July. This is the answer engine optimization (AEO) operating rhythm Lureon runs for clients across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews.

1

Lock a fixed query set and never change it

Define 15 to 25 core buyer prompts grouped by buying stage, and run the identical set every month. Month-over-month trends mean nothing if the questions move. Put experiments in a separate bucket rather than swapping them into the core set.

2

Turn on the new Search Console reports, then fill the gaps

Check whether your property has generative AI reporting yet and start banking impression trends. Because there is no click or query data, pair it with a custom GA4 channel group for AI referrers and third-party citation tracking, or you will have visibility without value.

3

Treat drift as the workload, not an anomaly

With 40 to 60% of cited domains rotating monthly, budget for continuous refreshes and earned mentions rather than a launch-and-leave project. Prioritize the pages that lost citations this month over the ones that never had them.

4

Fix your internal search and product data

Nearly three in ten ChatGPT referrals land on internal search pages, so make those pages fast, indexable, and conversion-ready. As agentic commerce grows, clean structured product and entity data determines whether an assistant can recommend you at all.

5

Buy earned media, not just dashboards

Brands are about 6.5x more likely to be cited via third-party sources than their own domain, and earned coverage is what survives citation drift. If budget is being approved this quarter, weight it toward proof that lives off your site rather than another monitoring seat.

One myth to retire while you plan: Google has stated that llms.txt files receive no special treatment in Search, including its generative AI features. Original research, first-hand expertise, and clean technical accessibility are what the guidance actually rewards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What changed in AI search in July 2026?
Four things. Assistant traffic consolidated, with ChatGPT reaching 92.4% of standalone AI referrals while Claude passed Perplexity and Copilot collapsed. Google expanded Search Console generative AI reports and launched AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on 22 July. OpenAI opened a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager on 22 July. And an updated randomized experiment measured a 39.8% organic click loss from AI Overviews, with no quality difference in the visits that vanished.
Which AI platform sends the most referral traffic now?
ChatGPT, by a wide margin: 92.4% of trackable standalone AI referral traffic, up from roughly 84% in December 2025, per Previsible's study of 6.77 million sessions across 166 sites. Gemini is the steady number two at 3.2x growth, Claude grew 64x and overtook Perplexity in March 2026, Perplexity is down 61% from its peak, and Copilot is down 96%. Important caveat: AI discovery inside Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode likely exceeds all standalone assistants combined and is excluded from that measurement.
What does the new Search Console AI reporting actually show?
Impressions inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover, broken down by page, country, device, and date, plus a toggle to block your content from AI surfaces. It does not yet include clicks, CTR, query data, or API access, so you can measure visibility but not its traffic value. Rollout is incremental, beginning with a subset of UK sites, and pairing it with GA4 channel tracking and third-party citation monitoring is necessary to see the full picture.
Do ChatGPT ads change AEO strategy?
They add a second channel rather than replacing the first. OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager on 22 July with conversational-context targeting, and ad penetration hit roughly 51% of US replies in early July across six countries. Paid units sit beside the answer and are labeled sponsored; the brands named inside the answer still get there through earned authority. A visible ad layer arguably increases the value of organic citation, because buyers discount placement they can tell was purchased.
How much traffic do AI Overviews actually cost publishers and brands?
An updated randomized field experiment measured a 39.8% reduction in organic clicks on searches where AI Overviews appeared, and found the recovered visits were not lower quality: return-to-search behavior, sub-ten-second visits, and time on site showed no significant differences. The first organic result nearly doubled its clicks when Overviews were removed. Losses concentrate on informational queries, and publisher ad inventory fell roughly a third to two fifths year over year in Q2 2026.
How often do AI citations change?
Constantly. Profound's analysis of 240 million ChatGPT citations found 40 to 60% of cited domains change month to month for identical queries, with 70 to 90% completely different over six months. Google AI Overviews show about 59.3% monthly drift, ChatGPT 54.1%, Copilot 53.4%, and Perplexity 40.5%. AirOps found only about 30% of brands remain visible from one AI answer to the next. This is why AEO is a maintenance discipline rather than a project with an end date.
Why did Claude overtake Perplexity?
Claude grew 64x over the 19-month tracking window and passed Perplexity in March 2026, driven largely by agentic tooling and enterprise adoption, with particular strength among developers, technical buyers, and professional services. Perplexity has fallen 61% from its early-2025 peak despite product launches. The wider lesson is that platform bets reverse quickly: both Perplexity and Copilot were being sold as inevitable a year ago, which is the argument for multi-platform visibility rather than concentrated effort.
How big is the AI visibility market now?
AI visibility tooling raised over $300 million between summer 2025 and spring 2026, with category leader Profound reaching a $1 billion valuation on a $96 million Series C. Demand is following the funding: Conductor's 2026 research found 94% of CMOs plan to increase AI visibility spend this year, and enterprises already allocate around 12% of digital budgets to it. The practical risk is budget landing on measurement rather than on the earned media and content work that actually shifts citations.
Does llms.txt help with AI search visibility?
No. Google has explicitly stated that llms.txt files receive no special treatment in Google Search, including its generative AI features. The signals that do earn citations are original research, first-hand expertise, clean technical accessibility for AI crawlers, structured extractable content, and third-party corroboration. Time spent on llms.txt is better spent on entity consistency and earned mentions.
How should I run my own monthly AI visibility review?
Lock 15 to 25 high-intent buyer prompts grouped by buying stage and run the identical set monthly, since trends only mean something if the queries stay fixed. Log whether you are named, at what position, and which competitors appear, then pair that with Search Console AI impressions and a custom GA4 channel group for AI referrers. Monthly is the right cadence with a quarterly deep dive; quarterly alone is too slow to catch competitive shifts given the drift rate.
