AI Is Eating Search: AI answers now sit on 48% of Google queries, and the clicks they eat convert 4.4x better somewhere else
Search did not die. It got swallowed into the answer. This Lureon report pulls together every major 2025–2026 study on where the clicks went, who is losing them, and why the small stream of AI-referred visitors is quietly becoming the most valuable traffic on the web.

48%of Google queries now trigger an AI Overview, up 58% year over year (March 2026)
60%of searches end without a click to any website; 80–83% when an AI Overview answers
16xgrowth in AI referral traffic to websites from 2024 to 2026 (SE Ranking)
4.4xhigher conversion rate for AI-referred visitors vs organic search (Semrush)
Quick answer: is AI actually eating search? Yes, but not the way the headlines say. Total information-seeking grew about 26% since 2023: Google's absolute query volume held while AI captured the growth, pushing Google's share of combined discovery from 89% to below 58%. Inside Google, AI Overviews now answer 48% of queries and cut organic clicks 34–61% when they appear. The clicks that survive migrate into AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok), where referred visitors convert 4.4x better than organic. Search demand is intact. The click economy underneath it is being rebuilt, and answer engine optimization (AEO), the discipline Lureon delivers, is how brands stay in the new one.
The Big Picture
Is Google dying? No. Its monopoly on discovery is
Two things are true at once, and most takes only pick one. Google still processes about 8.5 billion searches a day and holds roughly 90% of traditional search share. And the ground under that number has moved completely.
What held
Google's traditional-search share sits near 89.9–91.4% globally, essentially flat for a decade. Absolute search volume kept growing through 2026. Gartner's famous prediction that search volume would fall 25% by 2026 missed on volume: the pie did not shrink.
What broke
The pie grew and AI ate the growth. Combined information-discovery sessions rose ~26% from 2023 to 2025, and Google's share of that combined pie fell from 89% to below 58%. ChatGPT alone crossed 1 billion weekly users and over 1 billion search-style queries per week. On a per-user basis in the US, the 25% search decline already happened.
The pattern rhymes with mobile in 2010: new behavior stacked on top of old behavior instead of replacing it. The strategic consequence is the same, too. A marketing team optimized for one surface is built for a market that no longer exists. Lureon's AI Recommendation Gap report documents what happens to the brands that have not noticed: 96% of B2B companies are effectively invisible in AI discovery.
The Click Collapse
What AI answers do to your clicks
Every major methodology, correlational, clickstream, and a randomized field experiment, lands in the same range: when an AI answer appears, a third to two thirds of organic clicks disappear.
Measured organic click decline when an AI answer appears
Independent studies, 2025–2026, by source and method
Sources: Seer Interactive (3,100+ queries, 42 orgs, Nov 2025); Ahrefs (300,000 keywords, Apr and Dec 2025); Pew Research Center (68,879 real searches, Jul 2025); randomized field experiment reported by Search Engine Journal, Apr 2026.
Note the trajectory inside the Ahrefs data: the same study measured a 34.5% decline in April 2025 and 58% by December 2025. The effect is accelerating, not plateauing, and coverage is widening at the same time: AI Overviews appeared on 18% of queries in early 2025, 25.8% by late 2025, and 48% by March 2026. Downstream, US organic search traffic fell 2.5% year over year, publishers lost 38% of Google referral traffic, and organic click share dropped 11 to 23 percentage points across every retail vertical one study measured. The demand is still there. The click path collapsed.
The Other Side of the Ledger
Where the attention went
The clicks did not evaporate. They moved into assistants, and the assistants are only beginning to send them back.
AI referral traffic to websites grew 16x from 2024 to 2026, off measurements like BrightEdge's 527% year-over-year growth and WebFX's 796% two-year growth across 2.3 billion sessions. It is still small in absolute terms, around 1.08% of total website visits per Conductor, because assistants answer far more than they link out. But composition is shifting fast: ChatGPT drives roughly three quarters of AI referrals while Gemini grew 231% and Claude grew 320% year over year, the fastest of any platform. Fragmentation is the other headline: chatbot market share moved 26 percentage points in eight months, which is why single-platform optimization is already obsolete. Our companion report, How to Get More Clients from Claude, breaks down the fastest-growing platform in detail, and our guide to getting more traffic from AI search covers the cross-platform mechanics.
The Quality Trade
The click you lose converts worse than the visitor you gain
This is the finding that reframes the whole story. AI eats low-intent clicks and sends back pre-qualified buyers. Every study that has measured it finds the same premium.
Referral conversion rate by traffic source
Seer Interactive multi-vertical client data, Q4 2025 to Q1 2026
Source: Seer Interactive platform-level conversion analysis, reported Q1 2026. Rates vary by vertical and conversion event.
The corroborating evidence stacks up from every direction. Ahrefs found that AI search was 0.5% of its traffic but drove 12.1% of signups, a 23x multiplier. Shopify reported AI-referred sessions converting nearly 50% higher than organic on product pages, with 14% higher order values, and over half of AI-referred sessions landing directly on product detail pages versus roughly 20% for organic. And the flywheel effect: Seer found brands cited inside AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks than uncited brands. Rankings don't pay you. Revenue does, and right now the highest-converting free channel on the web is the one most marketing teams are not even tracking: only 14% measure AI search as a separate channel.
The Response
What winners do while AI eats search
The losers in this shift optimize for a version of Google that no longer exists. The winners chase citations, not just rankings, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews at once. This is the answer engine optimization (AEO) playbook Lureon runs.
1
Optimize for the citation, not just the click
Being the source an AI answer quotes is the new position one. Cited brands earn 35% more organic clicks and enter the buyer's shortlist even when no click happens. That means answer-first sections, 40–60 word liftable summaries under question-phrased headings, and claims an engine can verify.
2
Publish for every retrieval system, not one index
ChatGPT retrieves through Bing, Claude through Brave Search, Gemini through Google, and Perplexity through its own index weighted toward niche directories. Multi-surface visibility, including the review sites and comparison content each engine trusts, is the floor for serious investment now.
3
Refresh relentlessly
76% of AI citations come from content updated in the last 30 days. Visible update dates, refreshed statistics, and a real review cadence turn aging authority pages into citation magnets, and they are among the fastest wins available.
4
Build the third-party proof engines cross-check
Most AI citations across platforms come from third-party sources rather than brand-owned sites. Reviews, category directories, earned media, and co-published case studies give every engine trustworthy places to confirm your name before recommending it.
5
Measure the channel most teams ignore
Set up custom GA4 channel groups for AI referrers (default attribution buries most AI visits in Direct), track answer share of voice on your buyers' real prompts, and report citation presence as the leading indicator with referral conversions as the lagging one.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is AI actually eating search?
Yes, in share rather than volume. Total information-seeking grew about 26% from 2023 to 2025, and Google's absolute query volume held, but AI captured most of the growth: Google's share of combined discovery fell from 89% to below 58%. Inside Google itself, AI Overviews now answer 48% of queries and cut organic clicks 34–61% when they appear. Search demand is intact; the click economy underneath it is being rebuilt.
Will AI replace Google?
Not in the near term. Google still holds roughly 90% of traditional search share and processes about 8.5 billion searches a day, and its AI Overviews and AI Mode are themselves part of the shift. The realistic picture is fragmentation: ChatGPT passed 1 billion weekly users, Gemini reached 750 million monthly users, and chatbot market share moved 26 percentage points in eight months. Discovery is now a multi-surface market with no single winner.
How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Between roughly a third and two thirds, depending on methodology. Seer Interactive measured organic CTR falling from 1.76% to 0.61% (a 61% drop) across 3,100+ queries; Ahrefs measured a 58% drop for top-ranking pages across 300,000 keywords by December 2025; Pew Research observed clicks falling from 15% to 8% of searches; and a randomized field experiment isolated a causal 38% decline. The effect grew through 2025 and is still accelerating.
What share of searches end without a click?
Around 60% of all Google searches end without a click to any website, rising to roughly 77% on mobile. When an AI Overview answers the query, the zero-click rate reaches 80–83%, meaning about four in five users get what they need without visiting a single site. This is why citation presence inside the answer now matters as much as the ranking beneath it.
How fast is AI search traffic growing?
AI referral traffic to websites grew 16x from 2024 to 2026, with measurements including BrightEdge's 527% year-over-year growth and a 796% two-year rise across 2.3 billion analyzed sessions. It remains small in absolute terms, about 1% of total website visits, because assistants answer more than they link. Within the category, ChatGPT sends roughly three quarters of AI referrals while Claude (+320%) and Gemini (+231%) are growing fastest.
Does AI traffic convert better than organic search?
Consistently, yes. Semrush measured AI-referred visitors converting at 4.4x the rate of organic search; Seer Interactive found ChatGPT referrals converting at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic; Ahrefs found AI search was 0.5% of its traffic but 12.1% of signups, a 23x multiplier; and Shopify reported AI-referred sessions converting nearly 50% higher on product pages with 14% higher order values. The AI engine pre-qualifies the visitor before the click.
Was Gartner right that search volume would drop 25% by 2026?
Half right. Gartner's February 2024 prediction missed on absolute volume: total search kept growing, and combined discovery sessions grew about 26%. But it was right on market share: AI substituted for the growth, per-user search volume in the US already declined by roughly that margin, and Google's share of total discovery fell from 89% to below 58%. The follow-on prediction, a 50% organic traffic decline by 2028, is the one current CTR data makes plausible.
What is AEO and how is it different from SEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content, technical signals, and third-party authority so AI engines cite and recommend your brand inside their answers. SEO targets ranked blue links; AEO targets the citation and the recommendation across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews. The disciplines share technical foundations, but AEO optimizes at the fact level: liftable answers, dated evidence, schema, and verifiable third-party proof.
How does a brand stay visible while AI eats search?
Five moves: optimize for citations rather than clicks alone (cited brands earn 35% more organic clicks), publish for every retrieval system since each engine uses a different index, keep content fresh (76% of AI citations come from content updated in the last 30 days), build third-party proof engines can cross-check, and measure AI as its own channel with custom GA4 attribution and answer share-of-voice tracking. Lureon runs this as a done-for-you service with published case studies and pricing.
How should I measure AI search visibility?
Track two layers. Leading indicator: citation presence, measured by testing your buyers' real prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini on a schedule and logging whether you are named. Lagging indicator: AI referral traffic and conversions in GA4, which requires a custom channel group because default attribution misclassifies most AI visits as Direct. Only 14% of marketers currently track AI search as a separate channel, which is exactly why the early movers are compounding an advantage.
